At the recent seminar “Making English the second language in schools: How to overcome challenges?”, organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper, experts, educators, teachers, parents, and administrators spent time analyzing, exploring innovations, contributing ideas, and solutions to implement the policy of “Gradually making English the second language in schools”, in line with Conclusion 91-KL/TW of the Politburo.
According to Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training (DOET), implementing this policy will not be rushed or applied on a large scale, but it will be piloted step by step, in specific areas, and schools with a roadmap.
“HCMC may start with schools already implementing integrated programs, enhanced English programs, advanced integration schools, private institutions, etc. Then it will be expanded… The Department will develop criteria to evaluate which schools have successfully made English the second language. This is extremely important and serves as a guideline for schools to implement the pilot project”, said Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc.
From the perspective of a private education system involved in teaching English in secondary schools, Dr. Dam Quang Minh, Chief Operating Officer of EQuest Education Group, also agrees on gradually building a roadmap to make English the second language in schools.
“We have been successful in building a model of national standard schools, and I suggest that Ho Chi Minh City boldly pilot the development of a few standard schools with English as a second language. Schools with English as a second language should also follow a roadmap, divided into levels 1, level 2, and level 3”, Dr. Dam Quang Minh proposed.
