From understanding to action: How CIS students are helping protect and preserve the environment

In some places, environmental education is often associated with one-off activities or campaigns. At the Canadian International School (CIS) – a member of EQuest Education Group – that journey begins with how students understand the world around them and their role within it. Green living is nurtured as part of students’ growth, starting from classroom learning and continuing through real-life experiences.

First, students are introduced to environmental issues through the curriculum itself, in subjects such as IB Environmental Systems and Societies, Ontario Science, and Environmental Science. Through these courses, they learn how human activity affects the environment, explore different perspectives on sustainable development, and build analytical and critical thinking skills when approaching real-world issues.

Learning at CIS does not stop at knowledge. It is extended into age-appropriate experiences designed for each stage of development:

🛒 At the kindergarten level, students begin with familiar, everyday lessons, such as how to make choices about the use of resources in daily life.
🌿 At higher grade levels, students take part in a club system that ranges from gardening and ecosystem observation to research, communication, and the implementation of initiatives related to biodiversity and sustainable development.

At CIS, green education is a long-term and consistent journey, with the school accompanying students step by step in nurturing valuable qualities: care, thoughtful reflection, and a sense of responsibility toward the environment, the community, and the future.
